The causal chain board
1. Labor demand
What the colonial economy needed, and who profited.
2. Demographic change
What happened to the population being coerced.
3. Coercive institution
The system built in response.
4. Imperial regulation
What the crown did — and what actually changed.
5. Social hierarchy
How the order was justified and ranked.
Link 1 → 2: state the relationship, not the sequence
Link 2 → 3: why did the institution change form?
Link 3 → 4 → 5: what did law fail to change, and why?
What this chain leaves out: name one act of resistance or adaptation it cannot hold
